DENIC at IETF 122 in Bangkok

The 122nd meeting of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) recently took place in Bangkok, Thailand, from March 15th to 21st, 2025, uniting internet experts in their mission to enhance the internet. DENIC's Pawel Kowalik and Christian Simmen actively participated in the discussions and working group sessions, contributing to the ongoing development of internet standards.

The Bangkok meeting saw strong engagement, with over 1400 registered attendees. The pre-meeting Hackathon fostered innovation, but a significant highlight for DENIC was the inaugural session of the new RESTful Provisioning Protocol (RPP) Working Group. This working group, born from discussions within the REGEXT Working Group and a dedicated BoF session (birds-of-a-feather session), aims to define a modern, HTTP and JSON-based alternative to the Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP).

DENIC has been a strong advocate for exploring next-generation provisioning methods. At IETF 122, our own Pawel Kowalik played a key role in shaping the initial discussions within the RPP working group. He presented the results of a CENTR survey on EPP Extensions, providing valuable insights into the current landscape and the needs of the TLD registry community. Furthermore, Pawel presented an initial draft of the RPP architecture, laying the groundwork for this exciting new protocol.

These contributions underscore DENIC's commitment to driving innovation in domain name management and demonstrate the active involvement in shaping the future of registry-registrar interaction. The RPP working group's first session was crucial in establishing the working group process and kicking off substantive discussions on requirements and architectural considerations.

For a comprehensive overview of all the key discussions and developments from IETF 122, including updates from other working groups like DNSOP and DELEG, we encourage you to read the full report published by CENTR (Council of European National Top-Level Domain Registries).

The CENTR report, co-authored by DENIC's Pawel Kowalik and Christian Simmen, offers a detailed summary of the meeting's outcomes, with a particular focus on topics relevant to the TLD registry community.

DENIC is dedicated to actively participating in the IETF and contributing to the evolution of a more efficient and modern internet infrastructure. The progress within the RPP working group at IETF 122 marks an important step forward, and we look forward to continued collaboration and development in this area.

The next IETF meeting in Madrid in July 2025 promises further advancements, and DENIC will be there to contribute.
