Registry Insight: Quotas in the DENIC registration system

In our blog post ‘Future-Proof Technology for the Realtime Registry Interface of .de,’ we provided an insight into the DENIC registration system (Realtime Registry Interface, or RRI for short).

In this blog post, we would like to provide an overview of the topic of ‘quotas in the DENIC registration system’ and explain what this entails.

Quotas and order points

What exactly does quota mean? This refers to a quantitative limit – in the case of the DENIC registration system RRI, it means a limit on the number of orders that DENIC members can send to the system per day. Among other things, it serves to limit the maximum number of daily orders to the registration system, protects the system from overload in conjunction with other measures, and allows fair access to DENIC's resources for all members.

Each DENIC member receives a quota of ‘order points’ per day, based on factors including their individual domain portfolio.

Every order that a member sends to the registration system is counted. The orders are processed until the daily quota has been exhausted.

Basic & additional quotas

Each member receives a daily basic quota for access to the RRI registration system. This basic quota is calculated at the beginning of each month and is based on the number of domains the member has in their portfolio. There are different categories for domain portfolios:

Notification of quota usage

Once 60% of the daily quota has been used, we will inform members of the percentage of their daily quota that has been used with each response.

If a member nevertheless uses up their daily quota of order points for a day, we will increase their daily quota in individual cases by means of a so-called ad hoc quota so that the member can continue to send orders to the registration system.

Quotas and poll messages from the registration system

In general, all order types, such as domain registration, domain data updates and provider changes, are subject to quotas. This does not apply to reading and deleting poll messages retrieved from the registration system. In addition to retrieving messages via the RRI protocol, they can also be received by e-mail.

Retrieving poll messages via the RRI protocol offers numerous advantages:

  • Messages can be retrieved and processed at any time, which is not possible with e-mail.
  • With e-mail, it is the member's responsibility to ensure that e-mails are received and can be delivered. Especially when external systems are used over which the member has no control, whitelisting and rate limiting may prevent e-mails from being delivered or cause delays.
  • If additional message types are added as part of a new RRI protocol version, the member can specify when they want to retrieve this message type by switching to the new RRI protocol version.

We are happy to assist our members who currently receive their poll messages by e-mail in switching their system to read and delete poll messages via the RRI protocol so that they can enjoy the benefits.
