With more than 18 million domains, .de is one of the largest and most powerful country-code top-level domains in the world.
Frankfurt am Main, 5 November 2026 – Forty years ago, on 5 November 1986, the country code .de was entered into the IANA database [1]. The World Wide Web did not yet exist at that time.
In 1988, there were just six registered domains when the University of Dortmund took over administration. As the Internet grew, so did the demands: in 1993, the IV-DENIC interest group was formed, and on 17 December 1996, 37 internet service providers founded DENIC eG as a cooperative registry.
“40 years of .de represent a development that has had a decisive impact on the Internet in Germany,” emphasises Tom Keller, member of the DENIC Executive Board. “The early, manageable network structures have evolved into a high-performance digital infrastructure. The fact that .de is now one of the largest country-code top-level domains in the world is down to the trust of millions of domain holders and our close cooperation with our registrar community.”
Today, DENIC operates the central registry for .de. It monitors the infrastructure round the clock to ensure that all .de domains are accessible worldwide in a matter of seconds.
Oliver Elste, chairperson of the Supervisory Board at DENIC, emphasises the significance of the anniversary: “As a co-operatively organised registry, DENIC has, since its foundation, combined security with shared responsibility and foresight. .de provides the reliable framework for a confident online presence.”
For millions of businesses, organisations and private individuals, .de is now far more than just a technical identifier. It stands for digital identity, trust and an online presence on the Internet.
Barbara Stolz, member of DENIC’s Executive Board, adds: “40 years of .de is a real success story. With more than 18 million registered domains to date, .de has become an integral part of our digital world and, more than almost any other country code, symbolises a connection to Germany. This success is primarily down to the commitment of our members and partners. Their long-standing commitment has had a decisive influence on .de and forms the basis for ensuring that .de remains secure, stable and trustworthy in the future.”
